TGIF | Mid-June.

Yes friends, we made it to another Friday. and with Sunday’s Juneteenth celebration, I think this might be the start of a three-day weekend for many of y’all. I’m loving the Black joy that Nicole A. Tayler’s new cookbook celebrates (this interview is so much fun) … and hope to try the Watermelon Ginger Beer (assuming I get myself to the store to buy watermelon and ginger beer!) … and on that joyful note:

Thinking about … what to knit next. I do still have a few things on the needles, but I finished the test knit for Heidi yesterday

and now I’m trying to decide between a new pattern (Ravelry link) and yarn I already have (from this year’s Beaufort weekend).

Grateful for … air conditioning. and for a three-day service “event” this past week that fixed our existing systems and didn’t require us to replace anything other than coolant. Apparently, the systems were installed (TEN years ago when the house was built) with a why-would-they-do-that bit of plumbing which, over the years, has deteriorated their cooling capabilities. We are now running the A/C at a higher temperature than before and the house feels cooler. Win!

Inspired by … last Saturday’s Moms Demand Action March and a statewide volunteer Zoom on Tuesday evening. The March seemed well-attended and it was, for sure, well-organized (by people much younger than I am, which is also inspiring); ditto Tuesday’s Zoom. I’m going to attend a local event in person next month and I’m looking forward to meeting people, learning more, and figuring out the best place to add my voice and my time.

Fun … have y’all seen the trailer (YouTube link) for the new Persuasion adaptation? Persuasion is one of my favorite Austen novels. Of course, I say that about most of them, depending on which one I’ve re-read most recently. I last read Persuasion when I was visiting Sara in Bristol (August, 2019) because it takes place near there. This adaptation looks like it takes “a few liberties” with Austen’s story. I’ve seen reactions ranging from “Oh no – there’s no way I’m watching” to “oh, it’s based on a book?” I plan to watch, maybe not on July 15 when it comes out, but for sure soon(ish). How about you?

Stay cool. and wishing you some watermelon and joy this weekend.

  1. Watermelon ginger beer sounds amazing — but sadly the recipe is behind a paywall! Oh well! I did see the new Persuasion trailer and found it … interesting. I think it’s fair to say it’s more inspired by the book than an actual dramatization of the book. My favorite film version is still the one with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds.

When do we get to see you modeling the new top?

  2. I’m not a huge fan of watermelon but I am intrigued by watermelon drinks. Enjoy your long weekend!

  3. The movie does look like fun. I think the Bridgerton series has/will inspire more adaptations that are a just a bit not in keeping with the story as written. Can’t wait to see the new top IRL.

  4. That Twofer Tank looks brilliant – how clever is that?!

I hope you managed to stay cool this weekend. Glad you got that A/C fixed!! No watermelon for us this weekend, but it’s one of our favorite snacks when the weather gets REALLY hot. I hope you had some!

  5. I really like the color you used for the test knit! What a fun addition to your wardrobe. 🙂
    (Persuasion is my favorite Austen, too. I’d watch . . . )

  6. I am glad you got your A/C in order… we had that done a couple of years ago and it was a night and day difference in cooling efficiency! Whew! 🙂

I am intrigued to see some modeled Two-fer Tanks! I have seen some of them in-progress on IG!

  7. We polished off a watermelon in just a day last weekend, so I might need to add one to my grocery list this week, and try some more efficient cutting techniques! I’m fairly unfamiliar with any Austen so maybe I need to remedy that this summer.

  8. That watermelon drink sounds refreshing! I’ve been using shrubs (both homemade and store-bought) w/sparkling water… and sometimes gin. 😉

That top looks great!! I love options.

I saw the Persuasion trailer and it looks intriguing! I’m going to see Baz Luhrmann’s ELVIS this week.

  9. Your tank looks so lovely–I want to reach out and touch it! And SO GLAD that you guys came out on top of the ‘why-would-they-do-that bit of plumbing’ issue. Big win, there!!
(Hm…watermelon + ginger. Your summer drinks offer combos I’ve never tried–but sounds like you’ve discovered some good ones!)

  10. Hooray for a relatively easy air conditioning repair. Thank you for your activism. Watermelon is one of my favorite summer foods but alcohol often is a migraine trigger so I best avoid the ginger beer drink. It sounds nice and refreshing though.
