Friday Already?

Hello friends and happy Friday – oh boy, this week has made me extra happy that there are FIVE Fridays in October! and thanks to my daily photos I do have some idea what happened in this week that feels like a minute and a month (I’m sure you know what I mean 😉 )

I haven’t walked to the lake since Saturday.  I’m wondering if these trees are now showing signs of fall … I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s walk to see.

I had a good hair day on Monday 🙂 and a final try-on for Donner. It’s now done and blocked. I plan to wear it this weekend. and hopefully have someone else take photos.

This photo was a little disappointing – I didn’t realize how quickly foamed non-fat milk would lose it’s “foam” … After a few weeks of research and experimenting with Pumpkin Spice coffees, I made a winning recipe. I’ve been treating myself to one every afternoon and yesterday Sara joined me and said it was delicious. I figure that means it’s ready to share with y’all:

Pumpkin Spice Coffee

1 T Pumpkin Spice Sauce
6-8 oz coffee, brewed strong
steamed or foamed milk to top

Mix sauce and coffee, top with milk (see below)

Pumpkin Spice Sauce (inspired by Gimme Some Oven)
2/3 C canned pumpkin
1/3 C honey
1 T vanilla
2 t pumpkin pie spice (if you don’t have this in your cupboard, here’s how to mix it yourself)
3/4 t salt

Add everything to a mason jar, put the lid on, and shake vigorously. It takes a few minutes, but everything should come together and you’ll have “sauce”. Refrigerate.

I like my coffee hot so I’ve been experimenting with how to incorporate the chilled sauce into the coffee. Yesterday, I heated the mug, then added the sauce, and heated it in the microwave for about 20 seconds before adding the coffee. It stayed hot. Next I plan to try mixing the hot milk and the sauce and then adding the coffee. I must say, too, that the sauce is delicious. I think it would make a great mix-in or topping for ice cream!

Now that Donner is done, my next sweater is Shifty … I swatched. and cast on.

next up on the left and October TBR on the right

The National Book Awards finalists were announced on Tuesday and I finally got my October to-read list together. It’s great to have a head start – I’d read three books by the time I took that photo. I finished The Prophets this morning (whoa!); and now I’m not sure which book to pick up next … that stack on the left are the contenders. Thoughts? please share!

My weekend looks to be full … a new sweater on the needles, a new book in my lap, and – finally! – blue skies.

Wishing y’all a good one, too!

  1. Oh what a lovely photo of the lake. Looks so peaceful. Your sweater is perfect and I look forward to seeing your Shifty. Awesome collection of books for reading too!

  2. I like your sweater, it looks perfect for Fall! I wish we would get some autumn weather here, but it is still summer…everyday in the 80s and not falling below the 60s at night. We’re still wearing shorts and tee shirts, drinking iced tea, and waiting for when we can turn off the AC and enjoy some autumn air! It’s at this time of year I miss NY State the most!
It looks like you have a lot of good books lined up to read in October and I hope you enjoy them!

  3. First of all, your hair is looking fabulous!! Love the colors you have chosen for Shifty and your books in waiting look delicious! Enjoy the weekend. We were in New England last week and a bit early for the colors, but still it was lovely.

PS I froth my milk (non-fat) every morning for my coffee. I froth it and then heat it in the microwave for 30 seconds and then add the coffee. It is delicious and stays foamy!

  4. Well, I already know what book you’ve started next because it’s now Saturday morning and I saw your post on IG — smart to start with the shortest! I am excited to see your Shifty. I’m hoping that this weekend I can work on mine enough to get to the body/arm split and try it on. That would make for some easy body knitting on the way to/at Rhinebeck.

  5. I’ve heard mixed reviews on The Great Circle. I tried to start it earlier this year and couldn’t get into it but it may have just been the wrong time for me. I love your sweater and your pumpkin spice coffee sounds delicious but I really only drink hot black coffee! (boring, I know)

  6. That pumpkin spice sounds yummy. I was never very successful getting nonfat milk to froth but the oat milk I use produces and amazing froth. Just finished making soups – maybe need to make some of the PSL sauce now. Before I clean the kitchen!

  7. You are rocking that hair- I love it. I froth Oat Milk and it stays pretty foamy. Like Vera, I froth it (in a by-hand-frother – definitely not high tech) and put some in my mug and microwave it. Then I add the decaf coffee. I store the container of milk in the fridge and it loses a little foam. Then I usually repeat the process for my second cup. I like the idea of making pumpkin spice sauce. 1 T. or even less would be plenty and I wouldn’t feel as if I was drinking pumpkin pie filling spiced with coffee. Beautiful yarn for the Shifty.

  8. Just catching up on my blog reading and have a bad case of sweater envy! A simple black sweater is a versatile pice to have. I’ve been resting my elbow for the last three weeks and started knitting only a couple of rows in the last few days. I miss it! Reading has gone off the tracks a bit. I have some good spiritual reading that is getting a slow savor. Today I finally decided it was time to read When Breath Befomes Air. Also halfway through The Choice by Edith Eva Egers. These have me branching out in my reading life and I’m really enjoying it. Can’t wait to see your next sweater take shape!

  9. Thanks for the pumpkin spice recipe – I can’t wait to try it! And I can’t wait to see the finished Donner. I love your Shifty colors! Mine has totally stalled, but I’m sure I’ll get back to it soon. 🙂

And what a lovely stack of books. I’m also in a reading lull, but I’m happy to know there are so many amazing books waiting for me when I’m ready!

  10. A good hair day makes me ever so joyful because it is fleeting at best. Loved seeing your photos and what you are knitting 🙂

  11. That sounds like a great coffee recipe, Mary. I always mean to try something “fancy” like that at home, but never seem to actually do it. (Mostly because I only drink 2 cups of coffee when I first wake up . . . and I’m not in the mood for fancy then.) (The rest of the day, I drink tea . . . ) Anyway. I’ll be eager to watch your Shifty come to life! I’ve always been intrigued by that design, but also . . . hesitant. I think I’ll just enjoy the vicarious thrill of seeing yours! Here’s to a great week. XO
