I am delighted that so many of you are looking forward to another summer of reading, sparked by Book Bingo – we’re going to have fun!
I’m pretty sure most of you know the “rules”, but for ease of reference, here you go:
1. books you finish between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend count. This year that means books you finish May 27 – September 4. this might be a great opportunity to finish books you started a while back … or you could simply get a headstart by “finishing” that weekend.
2. you get to interpret the relevance of the square to the book. You won’t need to defend your book choice … but I’m hoping that’s because you won’t need to. That said, I’m expecting that you’ll read a book that matches the square. One of the reasons I wanted to host this “challenge” is to post a list of categories that I’d want to be part of. As I post this, there are 89 categories. Some of my lifetime favorite books have been books I read – unwillingly?!- as part of this challenge in previous years. I wish the same discovery and satisfaction for you.
3. each book you read counts for one square, so a “full” bingo card means you read a book for all 25 squares on your card. (yep, even the free space in the middle – but you can read any book you want for that square).
4. there will be prize(s). leaving those details TBD until I know how it’s going. Regardless, to be considered for prizes – and honestly more because I want to keep in touch! – you need to share your Bingo card (plans, books, Bingos!). you can tag me on Instagram (@mere2007) or via a link here.
So – here’s the list of categories (there’s also a link on the sidebar). What’s missing? what do you hate? what would you refuse to read? what might you be incented to pull off the shelf?
My plan is to have the cards ready to go by May 22, so I need your input by May 19. Please leave your input in the comments or email me directly.
And thank you in advance for your participation – reading is good. but reading in a community is better. (and filling your bingo card is the best!)
edited on April 29 to fix the link to the category list (sorry about that!)

I might be doing something wrong, but I can't seem to access the list of categories (and I'm so curious!). The link takes me to a blogger site, but if I try to sign in I get this message: "Your current account (email@example.com) does not have access to view this page."
Hopefully it's fixed now – so sorry about that!
First I want to say thank you for doing this. Now all we have to do is figure out how and why Blogger is keeping us all from the list. I can't wait to see what categories you have created for us.
Thank you, Melissa! I think the link works now (my problem not understanding how Blogger works, I think 🙂
I think that's an excellent list of topics for the squares. I'm glad to see the "recommended by a librarian" one!
What a fun list! I may need help in finding titles form some but this is going to perk up my reading life!
Looks like a wide variety of topics. Thanks for all the work you are doing to put this together!
Yes, thank you for putting in the time on this excellent list of categories! I'm still trying to convince myself I will have time to participate over the summer but pretty sure I won't be able to resist. : ) It was so much fun last year!
What an extensive and excellent list you've put together! My only (tiny) recommendation might be that maybe you could add just a "non-fiction" category. I love "non-fiction about science" but (selfishly) have a couple of non-fiction titles on my list that are not about science. No worries if you'd rather not; I think I can fit them into a nature, food, or art category. Many thanks for all the work you've done; I'm so looking forward to book bingo!
A couple more thoughts – how do you feel about "re-read" and/or "fantasy"?
This is a great list with lots of options.
Excellent list, Mary! And thank you for taking this on! :-DI do take issue with the "free square" thing, though. In Bingo, the "free square" is a "free square" — you don't have to do anything — you just get a "free square." So. I think you should either NOT have a "free square" and call it "you pick" (or something) — or follow Bingo rules and make it a freebie. (Quibbling, I know. But Bingo. . . )
This could really up my game Mary! Thanks so much for putting this together.
Wow… that is a list of categories! Of course, there are one or two that I turn my nose up at…i.e. romance, and fantasy. Also, Alternate History? As in not history? All that aside, I can't wait! (And, I am with Kym on the "free space" issue)
FREE THE FREE SPACE! (Just in case you were wondering where I stand on that square.) ;)A category that always interested me on the previous BINGO cards was "Written by an author born the same year as you." Or something like that.Per your Point #2, some of my favorite knits are made with yarn that I was given — and would NEVER have purchased for myself!
